Ouch, this surely up-ed my expectations about the book.. i bought this book mainly because i had been following Amit for a long time and i liked his style... Sigh, i don't follow him anymore...Coming from an ace writer, i really had high expectations on the book... Guess that played spoil sport...

Story revolves around a journalist Abir, who is looking out for a story to give him a break... that leads him to an on the spot encounter, which is later on reveled as a mishap... in comes a girl Muneeza a victim of the said fake-encounter... Abir takes part responsibility given his involvement in her father's death... What ensues is for you to read..

Seriously, apart from an occasional jib on the Indian police system there is nothing much about the book... even the romantic angle doesn't gel well given Abir's character and Muneeza's innocence. and Amit has gone overboard in promoting his blog through the page.. any instance where internet is mentioned in the book, you can expect the blog to be mentioned somewhere near by.. Amit, Really??

Rat's Rating: 1.5/5
Two Cents: I wouldn't recommend it.. For instances, PK Junior and I had dissected the book and the dumbo still has a text message I sent regarding the lead character of "Keep of the grass"...

So it was more of memories associated when i picked Karan's second book "Johnny Gone Down"

Priced at Rs.99, one can say it is worth every 99 rupees you paid for it, NOT... Not a light read but not heavy either...

It is a story of a regular guy, okay not so regular, who falls into one too many wrong turns... Our Lead is Nikhil Arya who falls prey of an unseen revolution during a vacation he takes with his friend... Nikhil is an ideal character prefered by all Indian authors i.e. Chetan Bhagat kinds.. An IIT Graduate doing his post graduation in MIT and holds a job with NASA... SIGH!!! Get over with it guys... This is just way too ideal...

A vacation at Cambodia turns into a disaster and like all Heroes, our Nikhil sacrifices his passport for his friend and gets into foreign miscreants' hands... Trouble has just started baby... after two years under captivity he escapes only to become a Buddhist monk.... A Buddhist monk who falls in love with the first female he comes in contact with... correct me if i am wrong, the last i read was Buddhist monks are taught about abstinence and are taught to forgot all carnal and worldly pleasures... ahem!!

The love makes him mad that he walks out of the Monastery (is Monkery a word??) and joins a drug-gansta (yeah wtf.. don't ask me) Starts as a mere accountant and goes on to partner the drug lord and becomes a drug lord himself... meets his love again gets married and runs away again... why?? at this point i just stopped bothering... he runs away every time so that the other party will be happy, without trouble yabbity-yabbity-yab...

this time he flies to USA and finds a job as a software-game-builder... splutter-splutter-splutter... a mechanical engineer learns software codes and designs a 3D game... oh the Blasphemy!!!! oh so well he gets successful here too, only to give it up and fly down to India (oh, Mother India.. ye jo desh hai mera, swadesh hai mera)

ummm, where was i? oh yeah India... i am not even going to explain what happens in India except at the end of all, he meets his old friend from MIT, gets back his wife and kid and settles down with the huge profit he made with his 3D gaming...

Sigh... now where this ideal life... i am willing to give up my whole career to run around in the forests of Cambodia, slums of Brazil and homeless centers of Boston...

Rat's Rating: 2/5
Two Cent: Duh.. Attention has been given to each and every molecule that constitutes the book. The lessons, the way she is brought to sense about her situation, the longing of the youngest uncle for her, and her emotions, brilliant...

the stage is set when the uncles decide to take her to the outer peripheries of the nation where she can be safe till she is deported to another nation. The youngest uncle accompanies her and the travel adventures are brilliantly spun.. the help they get, the people they meet, the drones and the desert dogs, stupendous...

Let me digress again.. the drones are genetically modified humans and have features much akin to a robot. They have one orifice, the mouth but they don't speak or feed. They don't have any other orifice, reason, why need one when they don't eat at all.. Point! They are designed to work and obey whatever is uttered by the master... may sound inhumane but sounded apt to me, especially in such an advanced future community...

The niece safely reaches the outer boundaries of the nation disguised as a guy but her features are already in the bloom... to a casual onlooker, she looks like a eunuch, a common concubine of a landlord in that area.. she experience love, betrayal, trust and mistrust in a matter of 5 days in that place.

The book ends here, leaving as in an uncertainty... What happens after that? Is she safe? Does the uncle return back to his land? What happens?

But oh well, it is left to us readers to decide i guess....

Rat's Rating: 3/5
Two Cents: Must read.. if you are a feminist, you will be frothing in anger by the end of it, for sure... If you are a chauvinist, read it for plain pleasure of what the possibilities may be in the absence of a female..

Either ways, just read... :)

The 100 Book tag...

Seems BBC did this survey to "search for the nation's best-loved novel"... Erich Segal had been a great blessing to this world, literally...

the book is pretty slow and deals with story straight out of a typical bollywood movie... we have the rich-unspoilt(rolls her eyes)-football-jock falling for a go-lucky-not-so-rich-art-student.... the story moves on with the rich parents disapproving the pair and disinheriting our hero... he promptly disowns them too and marries our darling girl.... its a regular story with our girl falling seriously sick, alright...

but what really hooks on you onto this book is this: the jolly flow of the love between Oliver and Jennifer.... the warmth of the book lies in the dialogue between the characters... the pull is the unadulterated affection between Jenni's father and her....

And yes.. i cried, and i cry every time i finish the book.... its not because Oliver will be all alone...its not because Oliver had to leave his pride and ask his father for help... its not even because Jennifer dies.. But its the words that make me cry, every time....

And yes... This is a touching story of Cannie... her life.. her love - gained and lost...

Cannie is a regular-girl-next-door, with her frame slightly on the heavier side.. she is going thru a break up with her boy friend, wen he slights her with a derogatory newspaper column which he authors... Inflamed, Cannie tried to get back at hm only to face the wall.. he takes up a new girlfriend and keeps on comparing her to Cannie, with Cannie always in d bad light... this further irks C but she finds herself pregnant... going thru a personal and work related stress, C isolates herself and later decides to have her baby without her bf's support... in btw C gets a break at Hollywood thru her script... she befriends her movie's Lead actress, who stands by her thru thick and thin...

the book continues with C getting her Baby, getting back on her ex-BF and shining as a debut script writer at Hollywood..

Call me feminist or anything.. i loved the book... i loved d way C stands up for herself.. the way she decides that she wont need her ex's help... the way she achieves her dreams..its not that C is completely brave... she has her dilemmas and confusions too.. but she overcomes them beautifully.. .

C is a complete woman... C is d epitome of womanhood...

in btw: Good in bed is d title of the column d BF authors... this is replaced by C's column at d end of the book.. a column on C's baby... :-)

Been there done that....

the book by eM of The Compulsive Confessor... had been trying hard to get hold of this book for a long time.. i have been following her blog for quite some time, even before this was published... so u know my expectations naturally wud have been on the higher side...

WEll.. wat to say.. it lived upto its mark, Partially... its the story of Arshi, single-independent-with-a-sucking-job-living-a-roomy-type-of-girl.... the various guys she meets and the relationship and emotions she goes thru... Arshi trying to find herself... and trying to find a stand...

i can so so so relate myself to the book... Fokir by saving Piya till his last breath against the Storm and water... Moyona how-ever ambitious is concerned about Fokir and interprets his feelings perfectly...

Kanai is a mere spectator saying us the story and sometimes witnessing it himself... we have several Kanai's in real life who are full of themselves and everytime they see a women, they strip them naked in their thoughts...

Its the story of evil and good, Dokkhin Rai and Bon-bibi... Its not who wins over but how they maintain a blalance.. Yin and Yang... Mangroves and Human settlements... Water and Land... Perfect Balance...

Its the love of Piya and Fokir... understanding each other perfectly eventhough they don't have a common language... Its the language of sea that they understand and clearly know what the other person is thinking...

Its the playfulness of river Dolphins and stalking of Tigers... its the perfect aim of the Crocodiles...

it is both revolution and social service...

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Swati Kausal. Read "A Girl like Me" by Swati Kausal, re-read "Ladies Coupe" by Anita Nair, read "Casino Royale" by Ian Fleming, read a couple of MnB (ewwww.. never never again me gonna touch this series... soft porn and nothing less.. i wanna save my hormones for something else..)

A Girl Like Me: Good read... esp when u have nothing else to do and no where to go... it beautifully paints the insecurities of shifting cultures... Ann aka Annie aka Ani is forced to shift from Minnesota to Gurgoan, India.. first she finds it hard and almost decides that she doesn't want to mingle in.. but wen she actually accepts and comes to terms with India, she goes thru an array of events that's too much to handle for her... Clashes with Career-oriented single mother, not able to accept dear Momma's guy friend, a new sort-of-sibling taking her place as a daughter, memories of gone Father and much more... this book doesn't provide u solutions.. this just shows wat kids go thru wen parents are busy seeking their destiny...

i sort of pictured myself as Ani... as a daughter of a ever-transfering-never-settling-bank-staff-father life saw me changing my base every 2-3 yrs.. but i actually used that as an advantage.. i can easily blend, make friends and good-byes are not so hard for me.. i have learnt and absorbed more cultures/tradition that i am complete mish-mash, celebrating every festival in India and mixing up atleast 3 cultures and believes.. i can understand most of the Languages and speak in quite few of them... May be because mom and pop wr always there to assure me.. May be...

Ladies Coupe: re-read this book after almost six months... eventhough i dont accept everything in this Fab book, i still hold this close to my heart... Here we see a single woman, Aki aka Akila aka Akilandeswari discovering herself, hmm atleast trying to discover... 45 yrs old Aki wakes up one morning and suddenly is flooded by the desire to find herself... takes a one-way ticket to Kanyakumari inspite of her younger sister's protests... she had till now sacrificed her happiness for her family, supporting her mother,2 younger brothers and a younger sister... Right from supporting her brothers' education to marrying off her sister to letting her stay with her even after marriage to digesting the sarcastic remarks of her sister, Aki goes thru just too much...
She meets 5 other women in the train and listens to their stories... We have a Janaki, who feels insecure with her husband's Love, a Margaret, who teaches her cruel-paedophilic-arrogant husband by destroying his self esteem, a young girl Sheela, who can see thru people's inner self, a Prabha devi, who oscillates btw being docile, adventourous and ultimately settles for a mix of both after finding her wings..erm fins in water, and then we have a Marikolundhu suffering coz of several twists, turns and innumerable surprises life threw for her...
the book ends with Aki reaching out for her old love...

What disturbed me was not one thing... some how i couldn't bring myself to accept Marikolundhu, first raped by her employer's relative, she later on indulges to please both her employer and her husband in bed... i couldn't accept Janaki's want of a Man to protect her, be it a father, husband or son...

but yeah... i pray for the guts and brains of Margaret.. i want to be like her.. non-violently, teaching a great lesson to her husband and not caring a damn about what others think about her.. thats will be me...

Lets better not talk about the MnB's and u wud have already watched Casino Royale on the Silver screen..

i am presently reading Amitava Ghosh's "The Hunry Tide"... other books lined up are The Last Lecture, the Leadership Techniques of Queen Elizabeth, The White Tiger and another book by an indian author the name of which escapes me now...

Rest in next,
D Rat

With time, I bet you’ll even like it.

the story revolves around Mariam and Laila.... both separated by atleast a generation but tied to each other due to the marriage to the same Devil Rasheed, who wants a son & nothing else... i cried with every thrashing inflicted upon these two ladies....
